Osaka based design studio DRAWERS, founded by Hiroyuki Ogura, has designed salon space of THE DRAPE kyoto, a concept store of Takami Bridal. On the upper floor of the building, you can find a wedding dress, kimono and men's bespoke salon.
When we asked Hiroyuki Ogura about the concept, he said, "I thought it would be a great opportunity to meet the customer here, and we developed the design with the keyword, 'once-in-a-lifetime encounter'." Considering the location of Kyoto, the overall space was designed with the inner beauty of Japanese style rather than a luxurious one. In response to the owner's request to bring in life-like materials, Ogura chose artisanal finishes such as the polished counter, Ohtsu walls, and hammered copper plates around the ceiling.
Part of the wall was covered with Otsu-Migaki polished wall, which is hand-finished in more than 20 steps by a highly-skilled plaster craftsman Mitsuru Konuma.
Also, the custom-made sinks in copper were designed with the designers' hope that the employees will love them as they use them.
Ogura said, "We rediscovered the depth of Japanese culture and craftsmanship in the process of exploring original finishes to make our designs worthy of an exclusive wedding dress store.
DETAIL
The 'Ohtsu' polished wall in front was hand finished by one of Japan's leading plasterers, Mitsuru Konuma.
The smooth counter was finished in polished plaster with special blades.
The designer Ogura installed a combination of hammered and flat copper plates with solid copper joints for the wall above the counter.
They built in custom-made solid glass lighting on the sides of the bench seat.
Behind the counter, a custom-made sink was made from copper plates. The designer said it requires daily maintenance, but that's how you get attached to it.
