Nara-based lighting studio NEW LIGHT POTTERY has released a limited edition 'tin' in its Bullet, a series of brass pendant lights. The 'tin' is a silver-coloured model with a baking tin coat on a cast brass body.
When we asked Hiroyuki Nagatomi, the founder of NEW LIGHT POTTERY, about the reason for the development, he said, "Our Bullet series is a product made of cast brass, and is available in two versions: unpainted or dyed black. But, when we wanted to harmonise with the interior, we sometimes needed a neutral colour, neither brass nor black. So we decided to create a silver-coloured model, with a dull sheen, like a pewter* plate.
The factory that manufactured the main body did not do tin baking, so they offered it to a copperware workshop where my acquaintance worked. Also, the high accuracy of the brass castings allows for a beautiful, smooth tin coating. After the tin coating, the surface is gently polished to give a subdued look with less shine, and the tin surface will darken slightly over time.
Due to the difficulties of the tin-baking process, it is sold as a limited edition, not as a standard product. There is also a silver-plated version of the Bullet, specially ordered by HIKE, a vintage furniture shop in Tokyo, looking like silver cutlery.
* Pewter is a tin-based alloy.
