The Outside of Virtual Reality by Shiori Maeda
Musashino Art University , Department of Architecture
This title is “The outside of virtual reality”, which means to think of the next spatially potential possibility by observe so-called the virtual reality (like AR, VR and projection mapping) from various aspects. This work present by three projectors and a sculptural screen. A inside and outside of Japanese house video projecting from three dimension. When you walk around by the screen, you get confused that where you are, Is it inside or outside , real or non-real?, and you make a new place out of the video and sculptural screen by combine three images with the feature of sculptural screen like the way of thinking “mitate”,which word means to guess what is this and where you stand in a Japanese garden. For example, in the one scene, you can see a roof and a Japanese-style room, in the other one scene, you can see a roof and a long corridor. A roof is the same place video but the other places have been filmed at different places. The walking human figure is real time but the walking human image is not, but you cloud mistaken both of scene as one image plane.
The virtual reality space will eventually make people see “THE PLACE” which have a strong influence to the creators, so I want to make more room for diverse ideas and viewpoints about this topic. The architect of next generation must think of virtual space and give real and non-real space a fair deal. I want this work to be consider as the first step for an experiment of new process to combine real with non-real.
