This two-tone half painted stool was designed specifically for a kitchen in a residence by Osaka-based design firm, naoya matsumoto design.

There was a request from a client to use the stools for a personal cooking school inside the client’s home. It was also requested to design the stool that harmonises well with the interior design of the place that used lots of wood.

A simple round shape was used for the seating part, and a disc-shaped foot rest was installed where a student and guest can put their bag on it. Matsumoto suggested to use a colour on part of the material, and selected a neutral grey colour in the end. The lower base of the stool would be unpainted, while the upper part would be painted in grey. The reason for not painting the base of the stool was because the lower part would have more scratches over time, and that it won’t be too obvious even if the paint would peel off from there. Also the designer wanted to still show the wood grain of the painted part, a very thin layer of paint was applied.

The triangular shape of the stool legs would require some effort to assemble, but its design would make it more stable structure-wise.

This stool has such a simple shape, and yet it won’t be easy to get worn out even after a long period of usage. The designer achieved a high quality design for this stool that can be used in everyday life.
